Hofmeister’s revival accelerates as premium German lager hits UK supermarkets
The iconic British beer brand Hofmeister has expanded its reach into supermarket aisles with a full range of premium German lagers, bolstered by recent awards and a strategic shift from on-trade to retail distribution, signalling a resilient comeback after a decade away from mainstream grocery shelves.
Hofmeister’s move into the supermarket sector has now become a reality, with its complete three-beer range available across all 25 Booths stores. The launch comes shortly after the brewer received major recognition at the International Beer Challenge, where it was named Supreme Champion Brewer as well as Brewer of the Year Europe. The range includes Helles, Weisse and Bearly Any, all introduced in new 500ml bottles for the northern supermarket chain.
The development represents an important step for Hofmeister, which since its revival in 2016 has primarily focused on the premium on-trade market rather than mainstream grocery retail. The brand remains familiar to many British consumers through its iconic “Follow the Bear” advertising campaigns of the 1980s and 1990s. Today, however, Hofmeister positions itself as a modern British-owned brand combining its heritage with German brewing expertise. Its beers are brewed in Bavaria by the fourth-generation Schweiger brewery in accordance with traditional Reinheitsgebot brewing standards.
The partnership with Booths is particularly significant given the retailer’s approach to beer selection. Its beer buyer, Pete Newton, oversees a range of more than 500 beers and assesses products based on factors such as taste, freshness, brewery reputation, provenance and shelf appeal. Booths’ drinks team has also received recognition within the retail industry, reinforcing the significance of Hofmeister securing a listing with the retailer. The supermarket has welcomed the return of Hofmeister, highlighting the quality and appeal of its continental lager.
The move also reflects the brewer’s expanding distribution strategy. Hofmeister’s range consists of Helles Lager at 5% ABV, Weisse at 5.1% ABV and the lower-alcohol Bearly Any at 0.5% ABV. The company has previously outlined ambitious plans to significantly increase production over the coming years. Its distribution network has continued to develop, with the brand strengthening its presence across both the on-trade and off-trade markets as it looks to build wider retail availability.
Hofmeister’s recent awards success further strengthens its positioning. Alongside its major brewer awards, Hofmeister Weisse received recognition as Best Wheat Beer, while the 0.5% ABV Bearly Any secured a gold medal. This gives the brand an award-winning portfolio covering traditional lager, wheat beer and low-alcohol beer, providing Booths shoppers with a broader selection than simply the revived lager associated with Hofmeister’s historic advertising campaigns.
Chief executive Spencer Chambers is positioning Hofmeister as a premium product that nevertheless offers strong value for money. The company believes consumers are increasingly willing to pay slightly more for beers that offer genuine brewing expertise and authenticity. Hofmeister also sees an opportunity in the growing interest in continental-style lagers within supermarkets, particularly as traditional mainstream brands face increasing competition.
To support its renewed growth ambitions, Hofmeister is investing £2 million in out-of-home advertising. George the Bear is also set to return to billboards in the autumn, coinciding with the build-up to Oktoberfest. The brand’s 500ml bottle format is designed to reflect the traditional serving size commonly found in Germany and other European markets.
Hofmeister is now looking to turn its strong heritage and consumer nostalgia into sustained commercial growth. Once associated primarily with its famous 1980s and 1990s advertising, the brand has undergone a significant transformation since its revival. Its growing presence in premium pubs, bars, hotels and restaurants has helped establish a more contemporary positioning, while the Booths listing represents an opportunity to take that proposition into grocery retail.
The key question now is whether the Booths launch will remain a regional success or become a stepping stone towards wider supermarket distribution across the UK. With growing retail ambitions, significant marketing investment and a portfolio backed by international brewing awards, Hofmeister is clearly aiming to make the return of the bear much bigger than a nostalgia-driven revival.
